Mediterranean Mussel

Mytilus galloprovincialis

Mediterranean Mussels are plump, meaty mussels with a rich, sweet, briny flavor and lots of orange-gold meat. They’re excellent for hearty pots of steamed mussels, tomato-based sauces, pastas, and any dish where you want a little more intensity than a classic blue mussel.

Sustainability Consideration:

Like other farmed mussels, Mediterranean Mussels are a low-impact, environmentally friendly choice:

  • They’re filter feeders, helping clarify water by consuming plankton and suspended particles.
  • Farming generally uses no feed, fertilizer, or chemicals—they live on what the bay provides.
  • Gear and footprint are modest, and when farms are well-sited and managed, habitat impacts are minimal.

Monterey Fish Market works with reputable farms and harvesters operating under strict water-quality and shellfish-safety testing, so these mussels are both safe and responsible.

Flavor & Texture:

  • Flavor: Rich, sweet, and briny, with a fuller shellfish character than many smaller mussels
  • Texture: Plump and tender, with enough substance to stand up in stews, pastas, and grilled preparations

They’re a great choice if you enjoy a slightly more intense mussel flavor.

Seafood Cooking Tips

Treat Mediterranean Mussels much like blue mussels, with an eye toward big, flavorful preparations:

  • Rinse & debeard – Scrub under cold water, remove any remaining beards, discard cracked shells and any that stay open when tapped.
  • Steam – Cook in a covered pot with wine or beer, tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and olive oil or butter until the shells open.
  • Serve with broth – Ladle mussels and their cooking liquid over pasta, crusty bread, or fries.
  • Pasta & rice dishes – Steam first, then add meats and strained liquor to pastas, risottos, or paellas.
  • Grill or roast – Toss in a hot pan or on a grill in a shallow pan until they open, then finish with herb butter, chile, or citrus.

Discard any mussels that don’t open during cooking and serve immediately while hot and juicy.
