Sustainability Consideration:
Farmed Blue Mussels are widely considered one of the most environmentally friendly seafood choices:
- They’re filter feeders, drawing plankton out of the water and helping improve clarity.
- Farming typically uses no feed, fertilizer, or chemicals—mussels live on what the bay provides.
- Gear and footprint are relatively light, with minimal habitat disturbance when managed well.
Monterey Fish Market focuses on reputable farms and harvesters operating under strict water-quality testing and shellfish sanitation rules, so mussels are both safe and a low-impact option.

Flavor & Texture:
- Flavor: Sweet, briny, and gently savory, with a clean “ocean” character and rich liquor in each shell
- Texture: Tender, plump meats that stay soft and juicy when cooked just until opened
They’re a great introduction to shellfish for anyone new to clams and mussels.

Seafood Cooking Tips
Blue Mussels cook in just a few minutes:
- Rinse & debeard – Scrub under cold water and remove any remaining “beards.” Discard cracked shells and any mussels that stay open when tapped.
- Steam – Cook in a covered pot with wine or beer, aromatics (garlic, shallot, herbs), and a little butter or oil until shells open.
- Serve with broth – The cooking liquid is gold; serve with bread, pasta, or fries to soak it up.
- Pasta & rice dishes – Steam first, then add meats and strained liquor to simple pastas, risottos, or paellas.
Discard any mussels that don’t open during cooking, and serve immediately while hot and juicy.
